Street Warfare Demolition Weapon - The Brummbär (German: "Grouch") Assault Gun

War Park December 17, 2024 12:18

The Brummbär Assault Gun is a self-propelled gun developed by Germany during World War II. The official name of the German side is Sturmpanzer IV, with the system number Sd.Kfz.166.  It is constructed on the base chassis of the Panzer IV for the purpose of infantry support. German soldiers usually call it "Stupa", which is an abbreviation of Strumpanzer (assault tank).

For the German army, whose tactics are based on total blitzkrieg, any urban offensive is a complete nightmare. From 1941 to 1942, the German army almost did not get much benefit from street battles. Entering vertically and going out horizontally became the daily routine of the German army. The tragic battle damage sustained couldn't help but make the Germans re-examine the problems of street fighting. It seems timely by then for them to make an assault gun dedicated for street fighting. The Brummbär Type was developed on the basis of the Panzer IV tank, and was designed to accompany the infantry force to advance and provide direct fire support for large-calibre infantry guns on the urban battlefield.

The total weight of the Brummbär Assault Gun is 28.2 tons, with 5 crew members. There is nothing to say about its infrastructure, that is, it is equipped with a fixed combat room on the chassis of the No. 4 tank, and at the same time, it is loaded with a heavy assault gun of a Skoda 150mm short-diameter howitzer. Compared with the previously hastily built Type 33 assault gun, the armour of the Brummbär Assault Gun is thicker. The front armour thickness of the body is 80 mm thick, and the front of the combat room is also 100 mm thick, and there is also a 40-degree inclination angle. The side armour is 50 mm, the rear armour is 30 mm, and the top is 20 mm thick. Defence performance is directly stretched to the limit for that period.

As for the 150mm short-diameter howitzer of the Brummbär Assault Gun, its calibre is quite large, but the diameter is actually only 12 times. It has a typical mouth and a short body. It is no exaggeration to liken this howitzer to a mortar. The high and low transverse range of this howitzer is 5-+30 degrees, and the direction range is 10 degrees each on the left and right, with 38 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition is mainly grenades, because it is impossible for 150mm shells to use full-loaded ammunition, so the shells use split-loaded ammunition. To put it plainly, the Brummbär Assault Cannon is a veritable tool for street battle demolition.

德军士兵习惯上称其为“Stupa”,是取Strumpanzer(突击坦克)的简称。
